Traditional Railway Picnic
The Friends of the North Australian Railway at Adelaide River was formed in 2001 to preserve part of the alignment of the former narrow gauge North Australian Railway between Adelaide River and Snake Creek. The Railway hopes to ultimately operate a heritage train to that destination, a distance of two miles.

Adelaide River Township is located on the main north south road, the Stuart Highway and is 72 miles ( 112 km ) south of Darwin.

The location of the railway's headquarters is in the historic railway precinct at Adelaide River where the society has been restoring the original buildings and infrastructure. The new standard gauge railway line to Darwin adjoins the historic narrow gauge line and at one stage it was proposed to utilise that portion of the narrow gauge alignment for the modern railway. However it was possible to re-arrange the layout to save some of the original railway yard layout and much work is going on to restore the ambience of the historic precinct.

Our Opening Hours are 9am to 5pm daily

RAIL TRAIL WALK FROM STAPLETON TO ADELAIDE RIVER
On Saturday 10 June we will be conducting a Rail Trail walk from Stapleton in to Adelaide River along the old North Australia Railway route. This is a historic section of the track In the 1880s a parliamentary delegation spoke highly of the agricultural and mineral potential of Stapleton.

The Overland Telegraph passed through in 1872 following the Coach Road to Pine Creek. The railway came in 1887 (Charles Millar did not quite make it to Adelaide River before the big Wet).

The railway route runs through undulating country which is spectacular at this time of year. No steep grades.

We are hopeful of having the company of an archaeologist who has studied the area in the last two year.

The Muster point will be Adelaide River Railway Station at 0930. Well drive in convoy to Stapleton and walk back. The rail trail is within 200m of Coach Road at all times so it will be possible to bail out as necessary. Sturdy footwear is required as we will be walking on ballast. The distance is about 12km and so it should take 3-4 hours at a leisurely pace.

You should come equipped with appropriate clothing for bushwalking, a hat, water bottle, sunblock, snacks, camera, note pad, personal items (in a back pack) and a CDMA phone if you have one (similarly a GPS if you have one).
