Set in a tropical garden on Darwin Harbour at Bullocky Point is the Northern Territory's premier cultural institution - the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT). The MAGNT collections place the region's art, history and culture, and natural history in an Australian and international context through research, interpretation and collection development.

These collections encompass Aboriginal art and material culture, visual arts, craft, Southeast Asian and Oceanic art and material culture, maritime archaeology, Northern Territory history and natural sciences. The MAGNT complex consists of five major permanent galleries, a touring gallery, educational facilities for school groups, a theatre, the Museum Shop and the Cornucopia Museum Cafe. All contribute to providing an entertaining, diverse and educational experience for the local community and visitors to Darwin.

A prominent event on the MAGNT exhibition program is the annual Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award. Established in 1984 by the MAGNT specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, the Award sponsored by Telstra attracts entries from the NT and interstate and is renowned for presenting diversity and innovation in contemporary Aboriginal art.

The MAGNT also presents a yearly exhibition program and tours exhibitions within the NT, nationally and internationally. This comprehensive program is developed by incorporating touring exhibitions from other museums and art galleries as well as MAGNT initiated exhibitions, which from time to time feature Territory artists.


Admission to the Museum is free or a Gold Coin Donation if you wish..
Permanent exhibitions are: Indigenous art and culture, Cyclone Tracy, maritime archaeology, visual arts, craft, Southeast Asian art and material culture.

All add to providing an entertaining, diverse and educational experience for the local community and visitors to Darwin.

Our Opening Hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Weekends and Public Holidays 10am to 5pm. Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and Good Friday. Admission free.

A touring exhibition celebrating the history, performance and music of one of the worlds greatest rock band is coming to Darwin. AC/DC Australias Family Jewels exhibition will be on at the Museum from 11th December 2010 - 27th February 2011.
Awards
The Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award, open to all adult Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander artists, aims to showcase the very best Indigenous art from around the country. The Telstra Award of $40,000 is awarded to the work considered by judges to be the most outstanding work in the exhibition. Additional prizes of $4,000 each are awarded in four media categories which are: general painting, bark painting, work on paper and 3D. The 28th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award for 2011 will be held on Thursday 11th August.
