It was in 1705 when Europeans had first contact with the Tiwi people. Then, 119 years later, the British established a settlement, the first in Northern Australia. This was at the short-lived Fort Dundas on Melville Island, near where Pirlanngimpi stands today.
It is necessary to join an organised one or two-day tour should you decide to visit the Tiwi Islands. Join a touring group in Darwin for the 80 kms flight to meet the Tiwi people of Bathurst and Melville Islands. Wonder at the dense rainforest, secluded waterfalls and beautiful arts and crafts.
You will be able to share with the Tiwi people their religion, culture and art. Part of their artistic talent is vividly demonstrated with their distinctive batik and silkscreened clothing, woven bangles, painted conch shells, carvings, pottery and the unique Pukumani burial poles.
The larger of the islands, Melville, boasts swimming holes, including those at Tomorapi and Taracumbie Falls.

The Tiwi Islands Grand Final takes place every March in Nguiu, the main settlement on Bathurst Island. The football is fast and skillful with many players electing to play barefoot.
