Fresh water was vital for droving and Daly Waters was the last watering hole before the perilous Murranji Stock Route. When the Durak brothers drove their entire herd from Queensland to the West Australian coast, Daly Waters was a landmark stop. The cattle were rested and the men quenched their thirst, today that traditions still stands although caravans and backpackers have replaced the drovers and cattle.

The telegraph line followed Stuart's route north, the untamed environment caused the project to fall behind schedule which resulted in the Pony Express being used between Daly Waters and Tennant Creek 400kms south of Daly Waters. An original telegraph pole dating back to approx 1878 was found out bush in 2009 and is now erected outside the pub.

Despite common belief Daly Waters was never built on the highway. Bill Pearce, a local tin miner,and his wife Hennrietta, in 1930, built a store to service travellers, settlers and drovers and later air passengers en route to London.

The Pub was given a jug license in 1938. Prior to the 2nd World War, Daly Waters was the site for the first International Airport in Australia and refuelled planes and passengers en route to London. The trip cost 275 pounds and took 8 days. The Pearces played mine hosts feeding and providing overnight accommodation for the travellers. Bill was also responsible for refuelling the planes. These days The Daly Waters aerodrome is in semi-retirement with private aircraft and Air-Med (remote area medical service) constituting the bulk of the traffic.

During World War 2 Daly Waters played a significant part in the protection of the Northern Australian coastline. The Australian and American air forces were based here along with Mitchell Bombers, Kitty Hawks and a fighter squadron.

Today, the pub is still a welcome destination for travellers. The pub is renown for it's service, hospitality, great food and cold,cold beer. Memorabilia adorns the walls from Irish football jerseys to bras. Wherever you look there is something interesting to read or ponder its origin.

The Brolga Award winning Stokes Hill Wharf is a symbol of the growing Top End’s development – linking the history of its colourful past to modern day living and pointing its directions to the future with the further redevelopment of the surrounding waterfront areas.

The history of the Wharf dates back to the early 1800s with the arrival of European settlers. They soon established the overland telegraph by laying cable from Java to Darwin. The hard work of the early settlers and pioneers soon was paid off with the rewards of the goldrush and the pastoral industry which determined the fate of Darwin.

On 19th February 1942, the Japanese bombed Darwin, with the Wharf bearing the full force of the invasion. Many ships and amphibious planes were sunk and many civilians, service personnel and waterside workers lost their lives.

Withstanding the hardships and tragedies of its perilous past, the Wharf survived only to be under attack again by the forces of Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

Regardless, the Wharf Precinct area is now an important contributor to the Territory’s economy by providing a world class cruise ship berth at Fort Hill Wharf and servicing leisure craft, fishing vessels and smaller commercial vessels at Stokes Hill Wharf. Not forgetting of course, the international and Australian naval vessels who are regular visitors to Fort Hill.

There are a wide range of eateries at the wharf featuring many national and international dishes. You may make your selection and eat next to the pristine waters of Darwin Harbour under a canopy of a million stars whilst watching the barramundi, batfish, dolphins and many other species of fish that gather under the lights in the aquatic reserve. There is also a licensed takeaway bar in the eatery and a dedicated dessert shop. The tropical sea breezes make this a very popular outdoor venue for locals and visitors alike.

Those wishing to sample the best in seafood, try dining at the award winning a la carte seafood restaurant, right at the end of the wharf. An extensive menu and variety of wines are available.

There is also a local handcrafted south sea pearl jewellery shop which has a display of both local and international pearls and other tempting jewellery.

Many wharf visitors enjoy the opportunity to relax and during the Dry season there is live entertainment on Wednesday, Sunday and some other ad hoc evenings.

There are a number of harbour cruises operating from the Wharf where cruisers may make their choice from experiencing sailing in modern catamarans, a pearling lugger or dining on board well equipped schooners whilst they meander around one of Australia’s largest harbours.

The Wharf is also popular for viewing tropical storms during the Wet and spectacular sunsets during the Dry.

Offering safe year-round swimming the Wave Lagoon is open daily and is a great spot to cool off, relax or ride a wave. The Wave Lagoon and shallow toddler pools are chlorinated salt water and cover 4000 square metres with the lagoon depth varying from 2m at the deepest point. Suitable for the whole family, the lagoon creates ten different wave patterns with the highest wave reaching 1.7m. Entry charges apply.

Run by the community-based Darwin Film Society, the Deckchair Cinema runs seven nights a week during the dry season screening a range of movies from family favourites to festivals and foreign films.

Our kiosk sells wine – by the glass or bottle – beer, soft drinks and snacks as well as a range of Deckchair merchandise. We also have hot food available. The box office and kiosk open at 6.30pm every night allowing plenty of time to enjoy the atmosphere.

The ambience is very laid back and relaxed. There are 250 deckchairs as well as about 100 straight-backed seats. We do supply some cushions, but recommend that people bring their own for extra comfort. During the months we operate the Deckchair Cinema (April to November) skies are usually cloud-free and the stars make a great backdrop for the screen.

Deckchair Cinema is accessible via the walkway from the Esplanade. This path is well lit before and after each screening. The cinema is also accessible from the end of Kitchener Drive, in the Wharf Precinct. There is plenty of parking available.

The individual villas are self-contained with kitchenettes, verandahs and en-suite bathrooms. There is also secure gated off street parking directly outside each villa, and a licensed mini mart for guests convenience. The Desert Palms Resort also has an attractive pool with island, gazebo, waterfall and footbridge to the island, a true oasis in the desert. As well as a half tennis court and large undercover barbecue area.

The Desert Palms is truly an outstanding establishment offering a calm, peaceful environment, which creates a sense of relief for the often-weary traveller. After a hectic day of travelling by road or air they can take pleasure in watching the world go by on the privacy of their own balcony while partaking in a light refreshment.

The earliest building in Fannie Bay Gaol was opened in 1883 and the 31 prisoners who had been held in a one room lock up in Mitchell Street Darwin, and their guards, became the Gaol's first residents.

Cell blocks A and B comprised 16 bare cells, each 3m squre and fitted with ringbolts and restraining chains.

These Heritage Properties managed by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northen Territory, represent the extreme opposite ends of Darwin social life in the past.

The Gallery is a large building of over 800 square metres encompassing 10 exhibition spaces. About 2km from Darwin city centre, we are just up the road from the Botanical Gardens.

This functional and artistic environment presents and sells a wide variety of quality art seven days a week, five minutes from the city centre. The accessible and diverse nature of the gallery have made it a must for art lovers and deserving of its reputation as one of the most successful commercial art galleries in the North of Australia.

If visiting Oenpelli privately please contact the Northern Lands Council in Jabiru to gain a permit. Oenpelli has fuel available at the service station and freshly made sandwiches, lunches and cool drinks at both the local shop and service station.

With the earthworks completed, more than 400 steel reinforced concrete piles will support the large basement slab and the 4000 square metre building. The supports are being driven by Frankipile Australia which uses the quietest system available in this country.

Chief Minister Clare Martin said the sea wall also continues to stretch across the harbour, with earthworks placed along 340 metres of what will be a 650 metre structure. "When complete, in September 2006, the sea wall will be the equivalent of three storeys high (from the sea bed) and up to 70 metres wide at its base," Ms Martin said.

The sea wall, which is being constructed by Macmahon NT, will create a four hectare permanent water body for water-based recreation activities. It will also provide for a walking trail along the length of the sea wall and will protect the waterfront area from storm surges. The Sitzler Barclay Mowlem joint venture said the convention centre is on target to open in 2008.

The Jatbula Trail commences at Katherine Gorge and culminates at Edith Falls, following the Edith Escarpment overlooking the Seventeen Mile Valley. Winding up and down through ever-changing environments and over undulating terrain, it takes around five days to fully experience the Jatbula Trail.

There are designated campsites at Biddlecombe Falls, Crystal Falls, 17 Mile Falls, Edith River Crossing, Sandy Camp Pool and Sweetwater Pool, each with natural swimming holes, waterfalls or wide rivers in which to cool off. Ideally, walkers should trek from first light until about 2.00pm, spending the remainder of the afternoon relaxing by a waterfall, swimming in a crystal clear waterhole or just gazing at the beautiful colours of the sheer sandstone cliffs in the afternoon light.

A highlight of the Jatbula Trail is about halfway along the track; the Amphitheatre is a butterfly-filled lush pocket of rainforest featuring Aboriginal rock art.

Seasonal Conditions Kakadu is treated to the tropical monsoons from December to March. The land is refreshed and revitalized.

There is so much to see we vary our flights to suit the seasons.

From January to May the 70 minute helicopter flight and 1 hour fixed wing flights explore the wilderness and waterfalls to the south, Jim Jim and Twin Falls are magnificent. These flights cease around May/June as the water falls dry.

All year the shorter flights and from June to December the longer flights view the spectacular variations to the land forms in the northern Kakadu and Arnhem Land areas. There are escarpments, outliers, amazing sandstone erosion, billabongs, rivers and floodplains. The longer the flight the better the sight.

From May to October, Kakadu Animal Tracks Safaris depart at 1pm daily from Gagudju Lodge Cooinda, Kakadu National Park, in our open-sided specialised 4wd safari vehicle in small groups. Bowali Visitor Centre Named after the Bowali Creek which flows nearby, the centre's long lineal design was inspired by an Aboriginal Rock Shelter. The Bowali Visitor Centre contains a wealth of information about Kakadu National Park. Information staff, videos, displays and a library are all available to help plan your visit to Kakadu.

Also at the Bowali Visitor Centre is Marrawuddi Gallery which stocks art and crafts, books and gifts. Refreshments are available from the Anmak An-me Café (open 9am to 5pm).

Allow a few hours to explore the centre and learn a little more about Kakadu.

Commercially operated camping areas with power sites are available at the Kakadu Resort, Kakadu Lodge and Caravan Park and the Gagudju Lodge Cooinda.

Major park camping areas suitable for large groups are Merl, Muirella Park, Mardugal and Gunlom. These camping areas all have solar heated showers, toilets and washing tub facilities. Ablution blocks have wheel chair access and railing in at least one toilet and shower alcove. At present, camping fees of $5.40 (GST inclusive) per adult per night are payable on site to the manager of the camping area or at the Bowali Visitor Centre. Camping areas are divided into 'generator' and 'non-generator' zones.

Free bush camping areas are located throughout the park. Facilities at these sites are basic or non existent.

The Kakadu National Park offers opportunity to experience magnificent ancient landscapes that are diverse, unique and lived, indeed very much alive. Marrawuddi offers the same experience through connecting with the art.

Marksie learnt his bush skills in the Mallee from his grandfather who was trapping rabbits for a living. Fried, fricasseed, roasted, potted, steamed, cooked over coals on a shovel, any way you could think of, underground mutton was served.

Marksie's grandmother was so worried about the lack of variety in the family diet that once a month she cooked a camp oven full of ferret stew - to rid their system of the rabbit build up - a recipe which to this day remains a treasured family secret.

Burnett House Gardens are available for hire and make a delightful setting for weddings, dinners and other social functions.

There are 13 gorges in the system, carved out of the rock by torrential summer rains over millenia. Five of the gorges are readily accessible by organised tour and boat cruise, alternatively the visitor can hire a canoe, or take a trek.

Commercially operated two, four and eight hour cruises are available, and the recently introduced breakfast and sunset dinner cruises have proved a popular attraction. Helicopter scenic flights are also available.

Within the gorge system are many fine examples of Aboriginal rock paintings many thousands of years old. These art sites are amongst the most popular attractions of Nitmiluk National Park.

The Nitmiluk Gorge / Katherine River was the cultural and spiritual foundation for the first inhabitants of the area, the Jawoyn and Dagomen people, providing for food and water and for both spiritual and recreational needs.

The Visitor Centre is located at Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk). Information displays explain the geology, landscape and Aboriginal history of the national park.

Informative staff are there to help you with tour enquiries and information. Parks and Wildlife rangers are also available to assist with your enquiries about walks and camping. The Centre has toilet facilities, souvenir shop, café, and also features an activity playground for children. The dining area, on the deck overlooking the Katherine River, is the ideal spot to relax, enjoy a meal or just savour a cooling drink and take in the glorious sunset.

The library is open to everyone. Housed in iconic Parliament House, the Northern Territory Library (NTL) is a reference library, whos fundamental role is collecting and preserving the Northern Territory's documentary heritage, and to make sure it is available for people to access, for as long as possible.

On permanent display for the public are significant works from the library's stunning collections, showcasing the Territory's eclectic and unique culture.

The Library also provides:

A Significant Site was located where the Library currently stands. It was where Darwins Post Office and Telegraph Station were originally located before being badly damaged by a Japanese bombing raid on February 19, 1942.

The Darwin Commemorative Wall Quilt is one of the many works that adorn the Library walls and with patches recording almost 2000 names of people in the NT during the Second World War. Each patch can be viewed online on our website.

Also on display is an Historic Northern Territory Flag designed by Robert Ingpen which was unfurled for the first time on 1 July 1978, the date on which the Northern Territory was granted self-government. This particular flag was donated by Mr Karl Schrimpf who recognised its historical significance for the purpose of display in Parliament House.

The large painting of HMAS Kootomba is not just a commanding image, but a powerful depiction of the Japanese Air Attack on Darwin Harbour by Keith Swan. The painting was commissioned by the Australian War Memorial in 1975, and is currently on loan to the Northern Territory Library.

Our NT Information Stand holds a selection of classic and contemporary books about the Northern Territory including topics such as Architecture, Art, Society and History.

The Territory Stories Alcove contains a colourful display of Indigenous artefacts from desert and saltwater communities and an interactive 'Our Story' giving library visitors access to a rich collection of images, video and audio material representing the history and cultural heritage of many Indigenous communities across the NT. THE ECO FRIENDLY FARM - GREAT FOR RELAXED BUSH WALKS!
Today Pell Mell operates a small scale live stock farm, which has been managed to sustain the natural and ecological resources abundant in the area. There are many different species of birds to be seen, with lovely morning birdsong heard around the accommodation.

RELAX AROUND THE PROPERTY

Perry's organized and conducted Coach Fishing Safaris to the Gulf, Northern Territory and Kimberleys to fish for barramundi and held one of the first commercial tour-operators license to fish for Barramundi in World Heritage Area, Kakadu N.T.

As a result of this long attachment to the NT and fishing tourism, "PERRY'S ON THE DALY P/L" was established. The opportunity to purchase 1000 acres right on the banks of the Daly River in 1993, was too good to miss as Dick and Carol had formed a love of the area and the "Mighty Daly River".

Barramundi are a recreational fishermans dream as they are hard fighting fish that will leap clear of the water many times during a capture, can exist in fresh or saltwater and often travel between the two, will readily take lures both Hard bodied and Soft bodied, and have excellent eating qualities.

Barramundi can reach a size of up to 50 kilos however to capture a 25 kilo fish is a fish of a lifetime and any angler that has scored such a fish, has lifetime memories to treasure.

At Reidys Factory the manufacturing process can be seen via a guided tour, and many hints with regards to tuning lures, swimming lures etc are explained around a swim tank.

A one hour calm water boat cruise where we entice crocodiles up to six metres long to the side of the boat. By feeding the crocodiles we get them to display their natural jumping ability- its awesome!

St Andrews offers fourteen apartments with all the comforts of home. Most of our apartments are two bedroom and are fully air-conditioned, with overhead fans.

The lounge and dining room is open plan, with a sofa bed in all Standard apartments. All apartments feature a television and video or DVD player.

The kitchens are complete with full sized refrigerator, oven with hotplate, and microwave. Coffee and tea making facilities, and all cutlery and crockery is provided. The laundry facilities are contained separately from the large bathroom, and all apartments have separate toilets.

We offer five Deluxe apartments, eight Standard apartments, one 1-bedroom apartment and one studio apartment. The Deluxe apartments cater to the business person, with a desk, and sleep four people with a variety of bedding configurations.

Our Standard apartments will sleep families of up to 7 people with our largest apartment sleeping up to 8 depending on sleeping configuration. One of our Standard apartments has been fitted out as a disabled access apartment and will sleep up to six people.

Vistors can enjoy live commentry given by park guides, whilst travelling on modern shuttle trains along a 6km road linking all 26 major exhibits.

Discover native wildlife up close at displays such as the Birds of Prey display at the Flight Deck or discover the secret life of some of the rare and endangered creatures of the night at the Nocturnal House. Come eye to eye with a 4m Saltwater crocodile as you venture below the waters surface at the Aquarium and walk amongst giant Barramundi in our walk-through tunnel!

Venture into the monsoon forest where you will find 12 different aviary habitats and one of the largest walk-through aviaries in the Southern Hemisphere. Goose Lagoon, Reptiles and Arthropods and much more make the Territory Wildlife Park an essential introduction to the Top End.

Enjoy refreshments in the kiosk which is open from 0830 to 1630 or bring your own lunch and relax in our picnic area while the kids enjoy the playground. Purchase a souvenir in the gift shop which is open from 1000 to 1700.

About Gaynor...
Gaynor Beck E.G.A.A did her apprenticeship as a goldsmith and manufacturing jeweller.

The first female in South Australia to win Young Achiever of the Year Award, Gaynor finished her apprenticeship and opened her first workshop in Adelaide in the early 1990’s.

Moving to Darwin in 1996, Gaynor worked as a Manager for numerous jewellery stores’, specialising in staff training and valuations.
