Avril Baynes - Mindil Beach Casino Resort
I am a passionate Territorian who has had the privilege of living in both Central Australia and the Top End over the past 33 years. A skilled and highly effective leader of large operations, often in need of substantial change, I have a strong track-record across sectors as diverse as hospitality and law. Having practiced law and specialised in ER/IR matters, I have a detailed understanding of human factors in organisations. My ability to effectively engage with external stakeholders is demonstrated with my current and prior industry appointments with the Darwin Major Business Group (Deputy Chair), Darwin Festival, INPEX Community Advisory Board and Top End Group Training.

My capabilities were in part forged by successfully leading the interstate expansion of a legal practice, as well as previous ownership and management of a number of well-regarded hospitality establishments. Since moving to Mindil Beach Casino Resort, I have had a number of portfolios across the business but in each case, I have been the person brought in to resolve previously intractable matters from cost control to customer satisfaction, business growth to employee engagement. My success in this area and ability to create and inspire teams to implement new strategies saw me promoted to General Manager in late 2020. In the last two years, I have spearheaded a complete business recovery program, which has transformed the business’ financial performance despite the difficult COVID era. I consider one of my most significant achievements is the return of the casino as a substantial supporter of NT sporting and other Major events.

If elected, Ryley will bring his wealth of experience and expertise across business events, digital marketing, Aboriginal tourism development, and destination management to the board to advance the great work currently being undertaken by Tourism Top End.

Jason Yule - Darwin City Hotel
JasonI am an experienced hotel operator having spent many years in the Territory both the centre and the fabulous Top End. My hotel life started in Darwin at the Mirambeena Resort with Frances Fausett back in the 90’s, as my GM she thought me very well and still does to this day. I have returned to Darwin several times including the Mary River region where I managed Wildman Wilderness Lodge which was a real highlight of my career along with my time at Ayers Rock Resort, with Longitude 131 and the various hotels within resort. Some remember me from my time with Gwelo and the build and opening of the Elan Hotel until its hand over to the new owners.

My passion has always been the NT hence my return last year and I very much enjoy the hotel world and whenever or wherever I can talk about our region I do, people do get sick of hearing the stories I’m sure, but I never tire of telling them. I have worked both the leisure and corporate markets, whilst we offer a bed and a safe place to stay - service and a quality product is the bottom line of it all, along with our passion for the business and region we are in.

I am currently employed with Darwin City Hotel and Darwin Resort as hotel manager for both properties, we are seeing a positive year ahead and I am certain this will impact all the operators within the room be they accommodation, touring, restaurant, and services within the city are region. Personally, I have always worked closely with the team at TTE and the relationships built over the years have been long standing and always positive, along with our friends at Tourism NT. We are all in this together and the drive and passion for our region will see us all succeed.
