Kakadu National Park - Bowali Centre

Bowali Visitor Centre, Kakadu Hwy, Jabiru NT 0886

World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, covering almost 20,000 square kilometres, is a place of contrasting landscapes and diverse habitats. Saltwater crocodiles lurk in freshwater billabongs dotted with lotus lilies. Rugged cliffs of the Arnhem Land escarpment hide deep sandstone gorges and pockets of monsoon rainforest. Waterfalls cascade into pools fringed with paperbarks and pandanus.

Kakadu’s landscapes have been shaped by water with the Mary, Wildman, West Alligator, South Alligator and East Alligator Rivers teeming with wildlife. During the tropical summer from November to April, waterfalls along the Arnhem Land escarpment are at their most spectacular, the lowlands are flooded, and the vegetation is lush.

Late in the dry season large flocks of magpie geese and whistling ducks, spoonbills, egrets and jabirus congregate around the remaining waterholes.

A number of Aboriginal clans reside in Kakadu National Park and the exquisite rock art galleries at Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock bear witness to their strong and ongoing connection with the land, having lasted for many thousands of years.

Bowali Visitor Centre, in Jabiru, tells visitors about the landscapes and wildlife of Kakadu.
This is a great first-stop on your Kakadu adventure. Our staff are on hand to answer questions and help you plan your walks and activities. There is a walk-through display where you’ll learn more about the plants, animals and landscapes you’ll see in the park.

The Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, in Yellow Water, shares the vast and fascinating culture of the Bininj/Mungguy traditional owners.
Spend a couple of hours at the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre and exploring the extensive exhibit – understand the complicated kinship laws, read traditional owners’ stories of growing up in Kakadu and see tools, message sticks and artworks.

Open daily from 9.00 am to 3.00 pmwet season (November - April) and 9.00 am to 5.00 pm dry season (April - October).

Injalak Arts

The Border Store, 1 ubirr access road, NT, 0822, Australia

The Border Store is situated in Kakadu National Park near the East Alligator River.

"Injalak Arts has started a pop up shop at the Border Store. The outlet is selling paintings on bark and paper, weavings and sculpture as well as hand-screen printed fabric lengths. Customers of Injalak Arts at Border Store will be safe in the knowledge that their purchases are contributing to an Indigenous-Owned charitable non-profit organisation. Injalak Arts plays a central role in the artistic and cultural life of traditional Aboriginal artists living in remote communities in western Arnhem Land. Injalak Arts is an outstanding example of a community organisation that delivers positive social, economic and cultural outcomes for its members. Other places to buy Indigenous art in Kakadu National Park do not support and represent entire communities or advocate for artists as Injalak Arts does. Gunbalanya is 12kms away from the Border Store, but COVID-19 has limited the accessibility of communities in Arnhem Land to visitors.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Border Store between 9-5pm, Monday - Sunday
