5 Day Top End Loop



This 5 day adventure encompasses the beautiful wetlands, ancient rock art and aboriginal culture, cruise between the sheer gorge walls and swim in fresh waterfalls. 

See Kakadu from a birds eye vantage and drift over an vital river system while taking in the wildlife surrounding you.

Driving south take the time to have a dip at Edith Falls see the splendor of this popular spot. Arriving into Katherine a country town alive with art gallerys and steeped in history.  A short drive from Katherine town centre is Nitmiluk Gorge where you can take a cruise or pack your hiking books to stretch your legs.  Seasonal swimming is possible 

Returning back on the Stuart Highway drop into Pine Creek a historic mining town. Further on you will pas through Adelaide River town where you will find the War Cemetery and Railway Museum.

Turning left onto Batchelor Rd to take you through to Batchelor 'the gateway' to Litchfield National Park.  Stop for a break and enjoy a snack and call into the musuem.

Finish off your Top End Adventure by taking the round trip back to Darwin stopping in Berry Springs take a swim in the natural springs or pull up a stool and enjoy a good outback pub.

Day One

Darwin to Kakadu
Departing Darwin early this morning the Arnhem Highway to Kakadu National Park. Stop in at Pudakul Aboriginal Cultural Tours for an interactive cultural experience.  You will need to be here for a 10.30 am start and will take approximately 45-50 minutes drive.
After the tour continue driving towards Kakadu, call in for lunch at Corroboree Tavern or the iconic Bark Hut.

An hour drive on from The Bark Hut you will come to Mamukala Wetlands there is a short walk from the carpark to the hide where you will be able to view an abundance of birds.  As the monsoonal season approaches the water recedes bringing the birdlife closer to the the hide.  Once the monsoon starts the wetlands come to life with fresh plant growth.

Enjoy dinner at Anbinik's Thai Restaurant or the Escarpment Restaurant at the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel.

Day Two

Start the morning with a scenic flight over the wetlands and escarpments. Early morning is one of the best times to view the vast landscape. Take a drive out to Ubirr Rock Art site this will take approximately 35-40 minutes from Jabiru. Here you can view some of the most outstanding rock art in the world.  Carry on a little further to Nadab Lookout, there is a short climb reach the top. Climb as far as you feel is good for you the view is still spectacular. 

Driving back 2km from Ubirr you will find Cahill's Crossing well known for crocodile viewing,  the Border Store with Injalak Arts pop up store inside.  Stop for a cool drink and pick up some great Aboriginal art.  Another 2 minutes drive is the starting point for Guluyambi Cultural Cruise. This cruise runs for 1.45 minutes where you will cruise the East Alligator River with an Aboriginal guide. Learn about their culture, local mythology, and the abundant food source found on the river.  
This afternoon call into Bowali Visitor Information Centre where they have an interactive display on the park.

Day Three

Kakadu to Katherine
Start early today so you can call into the ancient Aboriginal rock shelter at Nourlangie Rock and art sites. Climb to view magnificent escarpment views from Nawurlandja lookout. 
Head 3 hours south to Edith Falls plunge pools this is a local's hangout where swimming is permitted dependent on current water levels. Be sure to check if swimming is allowed as conditions can change. Travel to Katherine, an extra 30 mins further south, wander through the many art galleries and meet the artists. 

Enjoy dinner at Kumbidjee Restaurant or Katherine Club.

Day Four

Today take a short drive to Nitmiluk Gorge Visitor Centre approximately 30 minutes drive and see the interpretative displays. While at the gorge, take a gorge cruise or swim in the gorge, weather permitting. Nitmiluk also has a range of great walks starting from 1.8km (45min) moderate level Provides views of Nitmiluk Gorge, the Katherine River and 17 Mile Valley.
Just a short 17 minute drive back towards Katherine you have the opportunity to enjoy an Aboriginal Art cultural tour.  With morning and afternoon tours you can tailor your day to suit when booking. Still haven't had enough why not add a Helicopter flight to see the gorge from above. Make it an extra special time and include a remote landing at sunset.

Day Five

Pine Creek/Adelaide River/Batchelor/Litchfield
Drive 1 hour north to the old gold rush mining town of Pine Creek. Here you can visit the historic railway heritage museum and take in the stunning views from the lookout. Continue along the Stuart Highway to the Adelaide River township where you can wander through the War Memorial Cemetery. Before arriving in Litchfield National Park you will pass through the township of Batchelor. There you will find a butterfly farm, Batchelor Museum and plenty of places to grab lunch. 

Overnight in Batchelor or Litchfield.

Day Six

Litchfield/The Peninsula Way/Darwin
Spend the day in Litchfield National Park, stop at the termite mounds; take a refreshing dip in one of the many cascading waterfalls and plunge pools in the Park or take a walk-through nature. Stop in to Wangi Falls for lunch at the café. Continue on Litchfield Park Rd you can stop at the Cascades, or take in the view crossing the Reynolds River. On your way back into Darwin check call into Berry Springs Nature Reserve to cool off in the natural springs or stop at another one of the Top End’s iconic outback pubs Berry Springs Tavern.
