Australian Youth Orchestra - Brave New Worlds

Friday 17 July

7:00 PM

At AANT Centre 93 Mitchell St, Darwin City NT 0800, Australia

For the first time in over 30 years, the Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) comes to Darwin with a thrilling program conducted by the dynamic Antony Hermus.

The concert features Shostakovich’s haunting Cello Concerto No. 1, the sweeping gestures of Beethoven’s 'Eroica' Symphony, and Brett Dean’s powerful 'Testament'. Internationally acclaimed cellist and AYO alumna, Charlotte Miles, joins as soloist, bringing intensity and nuance to Shostakovich's powerful work with its rhythmic textures and obsessive motifs.

Composed over 150 years apart, both works chart a stylistic evolution from modernist introspection to Romantic grandeur but are united by themes of heroism, defiance, and emotional intensity.

Brett Dean's 'Testament' is the contemporary composer's response to Beethoven's struggles with deafness and despair but also his resilience and determination - that same spirit that drives Beethoven's 'Eroica', originally dedicated to Napoleon, was a revolutionary work that broke musical conventions and celebrated individual heroism and struggle.

Together, these pieces form a compelling narrative of courage, transformation, and artistic rebellion - perfectly suited to a youth orchestra stepping boldly into new territory.
