City of Darwin animal education officers offer free walks and events for you and your pet. City of Darwin run a series of community dog walks -‘Walk ‘N Wag’ – aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and helping dog owners socialise their animals and has partnered with Pawsitive K9 Behaviour to deliver a range of workshops to help you better understand your pets and correct any behavioral matters.


There are a number of options when it comes to outdoor exercise for your dog in Darwin. Learn more about where you can exercise your dog, including on and off-leash areas. All parks, ovals, reserves, gardens and beaches under Council’s care and control, are declared dog exercise areas. With the exception of East Point Reserve, Gardens Oval One and Nightcliff Oval which are not available for exercising your dog. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO



To keep our parks as great places for people and native animals, pets are generally not permitted in Northern Territory (NT) parks and reserves. However, there are several parks listed below where you can visit and exercise with your dog without permission or permits. For more information, read the pets in NT parks and reserves information sheet PDF (1.3 MB).


You can walk your dog at these parks in the Darwin region:

  • George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens - signs show leash areas. Find out more about the rules for dogs at the gardens.
  • Casuarina Coastal Reserve - signs show leash and leash-free areas. Find out more about the rules for dogs at Casuarina Coastal Reserve.
  • Charles Darwin National Park – sealed roads and carparks. Dogs are not allowed in the picnic area or on mountain bike trails.
  • Holmes Jungle Nature Park – walking tracks and carparks.

You can walk your dog at these parks in the Katherine region:

  • Katherine Region Judbarra / Gregory NP - carparks only along the Victoria River Highway.
  • Cutta Cutta Caves - carpark only. Keep River NP - Cockatoo Lagoon carpark only.
  • Limmen NP - Butterfly Falls carpark & Munbililla Campground.


You do not need a permit to bring an assistance animal into a park. You will need to show the assistance animal’s identification if asked by a ranger. The animal must be kept under control.


Hearing, guide or assistance dogs are only allowed on buses. All other animals are prohibited.

Where Can I Leave my Pet?
